Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real job

This was a great book to read! Especially since I am in my first ‘real’ job.

There were several things that I took from the book:

1.  The small things matter – small touches on presentations, hand written thank you notes for different occassions

2. Always having your game face on regardless of the sitation you are presented with

3. Turning grunt work is an opportunity to shine and turn it into something great

and more.

Obviously, there were several things that were pretty common sense like getting to work early, watching the emails you write and watching what you write on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I recommend this read if you are just starting out at your first job.  It was still great to read having worked at my first real job for the last two years and to brush up on some of the things we tend to forget because of our busy schedules.

Public Speaking anyone?

Being a good speaker is definitely important, no matter what career you choose.

After doing some research I found a website called toastmasters.com. Has anyone heard of this group before or has anyone belonged to it? I’m considering joining to ensure a good future in public speaking or even just conversing in unfamiliar environments. I don’t feel as though I’m deathly afraid of public speaking but there can always be improvements.

Ways to network

Join a nonprofit organization that offers networking opportunities. Not only are you benefiting the organization but also yourself!

Here’s a few examples of how I have begun to network:

* I am currently interning at an Art Center as the Development Coordinator as well as working full time as a case manager. Well I made the decision, knowing how important networking is, to join an organization, Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, to meet professionals. At the event, not only did I mingle (pretty impressed with myself) but I also met the previous Foundations Director of a financial corporation who had attended several events at the art center!

It was very exciting to be getting my name out there and to meet more professionals. I have also, requested to be on a committee to not only help out the organization but also to have more opportunities to speak with more professionals.

After all, I feel as though you can climb the career ladder better if you know the right people. Unfortunately, thats how I feel the world works… it’s all about who you know. If I’m wrong, let me know, but thats just how it feels.

* My aunt is on a school board and asked if I would be interested in joining the school board of my old high school. Working in the nonprofit world… it is a HUGE bonus to be on a nonprofit board. Naturally, I jumped at the chance!

After having two interviews and submitted my resume, I was officially offered a position on the board 2 weeks ago. Turns out, my aunt also knows a board member at the art center I intern at and said amazing things about me to her!

I had also mentioned the invitation to join the board to the director of my full-time job. Not only did she congratulate but asked that I stand during an all staff meeting and announce my great news.

It was an accomplished and great feeling to have co-workers (and the Executive Director!) congratulating me.

Not trying to toot my horn or raise myself up but its a great feeling when you know you’re doing good work and you’re acknowledged for it. Makes you want to keep working and it lets your employer know that you care about issues and other people.

To whom it may concern,

Well, I decided to write this blog for a few reasons:
1. I need of record of my thoughts
2. This may benefit some people
3. I enjoy writing and hope to receive some feedback from others.

This blog will mostly chronicle my journey from having a job to having a career. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll be writing but I’m sure it’ll include my experiences, situations, tips, books I read, etc., anything that will help me get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

If you have any thoughts or feedback, please please please share them!

Thanks for reading!
